An EPUB is structured text, not a picture of a page. It carries its own table of contents, chapter boundaries and heading markup, which means NarrationOS can read the book's real structure instead of guessing at it. That is the difference between an audiobook with proper chapters and one long undifferentiated audio file.
If you have a choice of formats for the same book, choose EPUB. It needs no OCR, no layout reconstruction, and no page-header cleanup.
The process is four steps, and only the first needs anything from you.
Everything runs on your own machine. Once first-run setup is done, no part of this needs an internet connection.
Fiction is full of invented names, and this is where most text-to-speech falls over. A character called Caelifera or a place called Ysolde will be mispronounced, and a plain converter gives you no way to fix it.
NarrationOS puts a narration editor in front of you. Click any word, set how it should be said, and hear it auditioned in a real sentence before you commit. The correction then applies everywhere that word appears in the book, so you fix a name once rather than once per chapter. Your reading text is never altered, only the pronunciation used for speech.
The narration uses modern neural text-to-speech, so it sounds far closer to a human reader than older robotic speech synthesis, with natural pauses and sentence rhythm. It is still synthetic audio, and it is not a substitute for a professional human narrator.
Where a line lands badly you can re-roll it, adjust how expressive the delivery is, or fix the pronunciation directly. That iteration is the point of the editor.
No. NarrationOS reads ordinary EPUB files. Books locked with DRM from a retailer cannot be opened, and stripping DRM may breach the terms you agreed to when you bought the book. Use EPUBs you own outright, public-domain titles, or your own manuscripts.
Yes. That is the main advantage of EPUB as an input. NarrationOS reads the chapter and heading structure from the file itself and renders per chapter, so the finished audiobook is navigable rather than one continuous file.
It depends on the length of the book and your hardware, so any single number would be misleading. A GPU is substantially faster than CPU, and NarrationOS supports NVIDIA (CUDA) and AMD (ROCm) on Windows. On CPU it still works, just slower than real time. Chapters become playable as each one finishes, so you do not have to wait for the whole book before you start listening.
